This weekend marked the second straight year the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament came to the streets of downtown Champaign. It was also the venue for the second annual Jeff Cumberland dunk-a-thon. The junior receiver on the Illinois football team won the slam dunk contest Saturday evening to defend his crown after winning the event last year.

July is a hectic month of almost non-stop work for Bruce Weber. The Illinois coach has often been on the road recruiting, attending multiple national AAU tournaments to scout some of the nation's best prep talent.
But even during the NCAA-mandated dead period from July 16-21, during which coaches are prohibited from recruiting, Weber finds himself doing work - yard work, that is.

During the summer, athletic trainers are still at work. Some athletic trainers stick around Charleston to help the athletes who stay over the summer, and other trainers get internships with high-profiled National Football League teams.
According to Associate Athletic Director Mark Bonnstetter, about four to five students have gotten internships with NFL teams over the last several years.

After swimming graduate assistant Matt Bos finished his master's degree at Eastern in 2002, he went overseas to coach in New Zealand. Since then, he has trained Olympic caliber athletes and was coach on the rise. However, when long-time Eastern swim coach Ray Padovan retired, Bos was drawn back to his former school.

Mary Wallace has been doing a balancing act between coaching women's track and field and working as senior women's administrator during the last three years.
By early July, the act concluded.
Wallace was hired as assistant athletic director, but had to give up her love of coaching in the process.
