NORMAN, Okla. - OU signee Scottie Reynolds has asked OU to release him from his letter-of-intent so he can re-open his recruitment, the DC Examiner reported Tuesday.
Reynolds, a point guard from Herndon, Va., is a McDonalds All-American and the No. 5 point guard according to Scout.com, signed his letter of intent on Nov. 9 last year.
He notified new OU men's basketball head coach Jeff Capel of his request Tuesday and said he still is considering OU.
"I'm not 100 percent sure I want to be at Oklahoma," Reynolds told the DC Examiner. "I need to be 100 percent sure, and in order for that to happen, I need to explore other options."
Reynolds was reportedly upset when former OU head coach Kelvin Sampson left for Indiana. Reynolds said one of the main reasons he signed with OU was because of Sampson's recruiting.
The 6-foot Reynolds can ask the OU for a release that it can either grant or deny.
If denied, Reynolds can then appeal to the National Letter of Intent Steering Committee.
He told the DC Examiner he would like a month to decide which school he will attend.
The three-time Northern Region player of the year was the second-highest rated player in OU's top-five rated 2006 recruiting class.
He was an early commitment to OU as he picked the Sooners the spring of his junior year.
Calls made by The Daily to Herndon head coach Gary Hall were not returned. Calls to Mike Mahoney, Herndon director of student activities, and Reynolds's home were also not immediately returned.
A source close to the team said that Capel could not comment on the situation until he meets with Reynolds. Capel will be flying out to Virginia on Thursday.
