Softball defeats Franklin, ups streak to 10

The DePauw softball team extended its University-record winning streak to 10 games by sweeping a doubleheader against Franklin College (8-14) on Tuesday in Franklin, Ind.  
? The team won the first game, 9-1, and the second game, 7-3. It has outscored its opponents 108-16 during the streak.? DePauw (24-7) snapped a 1-1 tie with a five-run fourth inning in the first game. Senior catcher Ashley Sewell hit a two-run homer and senior left fielder Nicole Kernan cracked a solo home run to make it 4-1. Freshmen second baseman Lauren Rees and center fielder Carolyn Bartlett added RBI singles to put DePauw ahead, 6-1.
? DePauw added three runs in the seventh inning to gain an insurmountable 9-1 lead. Junior pitcher Lauren Curosh (15-6), fresh off being named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week, gave up one run and six hits in seven innings. Franklin's Heather Cook (4-4) surrendered nine runs and 14 hits in seven innings.
? Freshman pitcher Katherine Veatch tied her career-high with nine strikeouts in the second game. DePauw capitalized on Franklin left fielder Danielle Gibbs' error to score four unearned runs in a five-run second inning. Junior third baseman Jessica Bowlds' one-out RBI single put DePauw ahead, 1-0. Bowlds scored when Gibbs mishandled freshman right fielder Chelsy Patterson's fly ball. Junior shortstop Kristy Mahon drove in
Patterson with a single and Bartlett added a two-run single.
? Franklin cut a 6-0 deficit to 6-3 with two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth inning. But DePauw stretched its lead to 7-3 on Bartlett's two-out RBI single in the sixth inning. Veatch (9-1) allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings. Franklin's Alyssa Grimm (2-4) surrendered seven runs and 12 hits in seven innings.
? DePauw travels to Centre College for doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday that will determine the SCAC Eastern Division champion. Both teams enter with 8-0 division records.
