Fine Print owner suffers stroke

Issue date: 8/19/06 Section: News
Each year, students anticipate the familiar scene of fighting the masses at Fine Print Bookstore to purchase their books for class. This year, though, one essential piece of that scene will be missing: Ernie Ford. Instead of serving the flood of students, Ford will be in his Greencastle home, recovering from the stroke he suffered July 17.

"Ernie's been a journalist too long for me to turn down the press," Linda Ford said, laughing, as she sat down to talk about the last three weeks.

While at his daily breakfast at the Monon restaurant that Monday morning with his wife Linda, Ernie Ford started to lose his speech. A short while later, the Fords were in the emergency room learning that he had suffered a minor stroke on the left side of his brain. After two nights in the hospital, Ernie Ford returned home to continue his recovery. Although not back to his old self yet, the Fords were able to resume their breakfast routine by Thursday of that same week.

"He was going to have his Monon breakfast, thank you!" Linda Ford said.

Although relatively minor, the stroke did affect Ernie Ford's speech and, at least temporarily, his ability to work.

Staying at home recovering is an unusual change of pace for the 14-year Greencastle resident. Best-known to DePauw students as the owner of Fine Print, Ernie Ford is also on the Board of Directors for the Putnam County Humane Society and the Great Lakes Book Sellers Association. He also acts and directs at the Putnam County Playhouse board of directors.

DePauw junior Tim Fox has worked with Ernie at both the playhouse and at Fine Print. "He treated strangers pretty much like he treated his friends," Fox said. "If you would come into his glass office...he would clear off a few stacks of newspaper so you could sit down and talk. He always seemed genuinely interested in what you had to say."

Earlier this summer he finished directing a run of "The Sound of Music." In the past, Ernie Ford has also served as President of Main Street, on the Cable Access Committee and as Precinct Co-Chair of the Democratic Party.
