There are times in an Editorial Board's life when there just aren't enough words - or editorials - for us to say everything that's on our minds and in our hearts. So, in the time-honored tradition of The DePauw, we present to you the first of this year's cheers, jeers and tears.

• CHEERS to Co-Motion and its campus leader, sophomore Katie Rappaport, for raising over $6,000 and beating Wabash College for the first time since 2003.

• TEARS for our football team, our fans and Saturday's loss. Next year. Go Tigers!

• CHEERS to a relatively drama-free Monon; there was less damage done to the Hub during the pancake breakfast, and general mischief was down from last year.

• JEERS to those people who can't keep themselves under control, particularly this year's crop of freshmen. The semester's almost over, boys and girls. You're not kids anymore. Grow up, Peter Pan.

• CHEERS to the Ethics Bowl team for their third-consecutive regional championship. Good luck at nationals.

• CHEERS to a fantastic youth voter turnout - way to keep the future of the nation in check!

• CHEERS to a sustained streak of student-initiated activism, both on campus and off. From the Sodexho boycott to the One-by-One campaign, from the Tigers of DePauw to students' getting out the vote, DePauw students are finding their issue and doing something about it.

• JEERS to the jerks vandalizing art on campus. We're not sure how such cretins got into college, but have little doubt they'll learn their lesson in the end.

• JEERS to those so intimidated by the vandalism that they stop fighting, stop creating and back down. That's not the way to affect change.

• CHEERS to the students, staff and faculty involved with the Nature Park. We're glad to see that there is some sustained dialogue going on, and hope these conversations can continue until everybody's satisfied.

• TEARS for Sharon Shaw, a Hub employee of 29 years who died Sept. 12.

• CHEERS for The Duck's decision to become a smoke-free establishment. This is a real step forward.

• CHEERS to Lee Hamilton '52 for taking the time in his busy schedule to talk to student journalists. After a long day of DePauw Discourse, it was really something for the former Congressman and co-chair of the 9/11 Commission to let himself be interviewed, on his flight back, by a group of college kids.

• JEERS to Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings for being so unaccommodating to student press. Why come to a University when you clearly don't like students?

• TEARS for the loss of Ronda Henry, professor of English, and other faculty of color.

• CHEERS for the conversations surrounding the release of the Greek Fact-Finding Commission. Unlike some other not-so-successful University initiatives, this seems less like a one-night stand buzzword and more like a real commitment to progress. Let's keep talking.
