Mobile art bicycles for public use

Student Arts Council is bringing art out of Peeler Arts Center and onto DePauw's campus. Through a campus bicycle program called Re-Cycling, art enthusiasts are looking to impact their community as well as provide public art for the campus.

Student Arts Council co-president Luke Schooler, a junior, said the program will involve 100 bikes that will be designed and painted by various groups on campus. After they're painted they will be placed on bike racks throughout campus and anyone within the community will be able to ride them and return the bikes to any bike rack on campus.

"Our goal is for somebody to wake up and ride one of the bikes to Harrison Hall for class, and then have somebody completely different ride the bike from Harrison to one of the dorms," Schooler said.

The community bikes will be in use on campus by Oct. 25 and can be ridden by any member of the community for no charge. In order to design and decorate one of the bikes, a group must first submit a proposal that can be found either online at the ArtsFest main page on the DePauw Web site or they can be picked up at the Office of Multicultural Affairs in the Union Building.

"The point of having a proposal is to insure that the groups designing are serious and that there has been some thought put into their ideas," Schooler said. "We want people to be creative with this so that the finished product turns out really well."

The Student Arts Council hopes their project will do more than offer the students of DePauw free transportation.

"This project is going to help those who may not actively participate in the arts to become involved," said senior co-president Dustin Funk. "I find that a number of students are unable to find a creative outlet outside of their classes and that is a real shame. As a club, we want to change that and make art an every day part of DePauw culture."

Schooler said he hoped the project would stir interest for groups at DePauw not typically focused on art.
