"I feel that the committee that was there took to hear what was said," Schmelzer said.
Committee chair Sarah Wallace, though not present at the meeting, will be compiling the input from the forum and making it a part of the information surveyed by the search committee.
"The voices of the students will be heard through their input at the forums," Wallace said via e-mail. "The student members of the search committee will carry the student message throughout the search process."
The Board of Trustees will be on campus in October and will hold a session with students and faculty to receive further input.
"We're still very much in the listening stage," Hollander said.
According to Schomburg, though, students can add their input at any time by e-mailing their thoughts to
presidentialsearch@depauw.edu.
The DePauw Web site will keep students and faculty updated throughout the process.
"I refer all interested persons to the Web site to obtain information about the progress of the search," Wallace said. "The 'timeline' link will be updated as progress is being made in the search for our new president. I encourage interested persons to visit the Web site often."
Hollander said she estimates "north of 100 candidates" to be included in the search. The candidates will be narrowed down to two or three by March. In April, the committee will make its recommendations to the Board of Trustees, and the new president will be announced in spring 2008.
Schomburg said the meeting was an important step in the process.
"I was very happy with the meeting," he said. "There were great comments, and it is clear that the students care about this. We will take [the students' ideas] back to the committee."
