Professor Andrea Sununu wrapped up Thursday's discussion with poetry, sonnets, and prose recitations that reflected environmental issues and human relationships. Many of the literature she recited described the tension between global warming and society, and encouraged its readers to embrace their surroundings.
Also on Thursday, the Union Building lobby housed a Campus Sustainability Expo and a separate Sustainability Expo to involve the greater Greencastle community. Freshman Jessica Fenn said she was encouraged by the community expo, particularly by some of the local efforts being made.
"The toy store next to Fine Print Books is working on selling environmentally-friendly toys, and practicing sustainability in the store," Fenn said.
By involving the Greencastle community in the expo, Fenn said she hoped tension between DePauw and the surrounding town will subside.
"We hope that the culmination of events over the year regarding sustainability will increase involvement and make people more aware of what they're doing in their daily lives," said Fenn. "Hopefully people will try changing things on a larger scale, whether at DePauw or on a larger national scale."
On Friday, Feb. 1, "Stand Up Speak Out" will take place in the Hub. An open mic will be available to any student who wants to talk, question or propose an action towards environmental safety.
Although Focus the Nation will officially end this week, more events will take place throughout the semester. On Monday, Feb. 4, a lecture will be held at the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics. Earth Day and Earth Week will also give students an opportunity to interact and react to environmental concerns.
