If the amazing weather this past Sunday was a testament to anything, it is that spring is just around the corner, which means that it is almost time to pack away those heavy wool sweaters, down winter coats and snow boots, and say 'Hello' to one of the most diverse and versatile fashion seasons yet. The trends are markedly different, allowing fashionistas everywhere the ability to create many distinct looks. After examining all of this season's trends, here are my top five favorite trends for spring 2008.
5. Floral prints are everywhere this season. From shorts, to blouses, to dresses, this trend is nothing like the late 1960s flower power trend of our parents' generation. Today's floral prints are fresher, more feminine and embody the essence of spring. Whether wearing vibrant silk printed or graphic floral prints, flower lovers everywhere can make this look both edgy and pretty. And if wearing floral prints is not quite your thing, try petal-inspired trim or ruffles to achieve the same look in subtler way.
4. Sheer fabrics added a more delicate, breezy touch to the spring 2008 runways. BCBG, Max Azria and Luca Luca both capitalized on this new look. Expect to see lots of apparel made of translucent tulle, organza and liquid jersey in stores. But this is also one of the more difficult trends to wear, because it is not always appropriate in all settings, which requires that you to use your best judgment. Sheer fabrics should not reveal undergarments, which often requires pairing sheer pieces over opaque layers.
3. While the goddess trend is not revolutionary, it is still one of my favorite looks this season. With flowy fabrics, soft pleating and lots of draping, this look is easy to wear and universally flattering. Look for toga-style tunics and mini dresses to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe. The red carpet has also been full of celebrities sporting one-shoulder goddess dresses, including Katherine Heigl in Escada and Anne Hathaway in Marchesa at the Oscars.
