The women's tennis team gained two wins earlier this week against Manchester and Indiana-Wesleyan, improving to 17-4 on the season. The men also whipped Wabash College into shape Wednesday with a sweeping 9-0 win, improving their season record to 15-5.
Against Manchester on Wednesday, the women took all three doubles matches and went on to win all of the singles matches but one, dropping only sixth singles.
The men won all of the singles sets against Wabash as well, defeating the Little Giants and forcing their season record down to 10-12.
"The match against Wabash went very well. We swept the doubles, and it always feels great to beat Wabash," said sophomore Anil Patel.
Patel also said the team found a way "to play within themselves and create good opportunities," despite the windy weather conditions.
For the women, senior Erin Andrade and sophomore Kayla Smith started the match off with an 8-2 game win over Manchester College's first position doubles. This allowed junior Kristine Lewry and sophomore Greer Mackie, as well as third position freshmen Janelle Arita and Kelly Buckley to finish off the doubles sets for the women, setting the stage for a victory over the Spartans.
In their match against Indiana-Wesleyan Thursday, the women took a 7-2 win, improving to 18-4 on the season. After falling in the first doubles match, the Tigers went on to win at second and third doubles, and then Arita led the winning effort against the Wildcats followed by wins at second through fifth singles. Freshman Zandri Strauss believes the women's success comes from their tough mental work.
"We've all been working on getting mentally tough," Strauss said. "As a team, we're continuing to improve on that."
The men will head to Vincennes University Monday as the women return to action Friday to host the Div. III Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
"We're all pumped for it," Strauss said. "It's the tournamnent we've been working hard for all weekend."
