The men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute tonight for the final meet before the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships April 25-26.
Both teams competed in the rain and low temperatures last weekend at the Little State Championships against athletes from other Div. II and Div. III schools. The women finished fourth as sophomore Lauren Reich was named the meet's Women's Track Athlete of the Year, while the men's team came in 17th.
Head coach Kori Stoffregen said that both teams are progressing well in preparation for the upcoming conference meet, which DePauw will host at Blackstock Stadium in one week. DePauw is expecting to contend for the conference title, as it has been competing all season with that goal in mind.
In the meantime, Coach Stoffregen hopes the men's and women's teams will take advantage of competing at Rose-Hulman tonight for several reasons.
"This is our tune-up meet. Most kids will probably not be doing as many events or different events than normal," he said.
Stoffregen also said that staying healthy for next weekend will be key.
"We've got kids coming off injuries; that's the most important thing," he said. "We need to get them a little more experience."
Senior Taylor Penrod said the Rose-Hulman Twilight is a smaller race, with less than 10 teams generally competing. This will be a decidedly different meet for the Tigers, especially in comparison with the much larger Little State Championships and the SCAC conference meets.
Less competition will give team members a better chance at winning their events. Penrod said strong performances this weekend could serve as good physical preparation, but also ultimately provide confidence and momentum for the next week.
"We're really starting to figure out who belongs in each event. Everyone's finding their niche," she said. "We're at a really good place. We want to continue to stay positive and keep moving forward."
