The men's and women's track teams took the final step in preparing for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship as they competed at the Rose-Hulman Twilight Friday evening.
Sophomore Lauren Reich, recently named Women's Track Athlete of the Year at the Little State Championships, finished first in the 800-meter race in 2:14.86. Reich's performance was good enough to qualify her for an NCAA provisional time.
"I was actually really surprised," Reich said of her accomplishment. "I was not expecting to run that [event] this weekend. It really helped that Alison [Case] was running with me and the whole team was cheering."
The provisional time means Reich is eligible for the national competition unless another runner should post a better time. However, Reich said she will be running the 800-meter again later in the season to try to improve her time.
DePauw also received strong performances from Case, a sophomore, who finished second in the 800-meter (2:17.40), senior Lauren Auld, winner of the 100-meter hurdles, and sophomore Nicole Stein, who finished third in the 100-meter hurdles and first in the 400-meter dash.
In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Brittany Brand came in first (1:09.54), while freshman Jackie Boehmler finished second (1:10.82). Boehmler also won the women's triple jump (10.22m). In addition, junior Julie Theibert placed second in the 1,500-meter run (5:01.06), as did senior Taylor Penrod in the 3,000-meter race (10:48.43). A DePauw 4 x 100 relay team also finished second.
In the field events, junior Adrienne Cobb and senior Courtney Thomas finished second and third respectively in the women's shot put, while junior Marissa Fenton placed second in the high jump. Sophomore Ashley Louise came in second in the pole vault competition, as did senior Katie Gernand in the long jump.
While many runners ran off events or fewer events to prevent injury and to prepare for the upcoming conference meet, Reich said having fresh legs was a key factor in the team's success Friday.
