The men's and women's track and field teams both finished second Saturday at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by DePauw.

The men's team finished with 137.5 points, and Trinity University won with 210 points.

Several team members earned all-conference distinctions in the two-day meet, as the top three finishers in each event were named all-SCAC.

Senior Ryan McElwain scored 18 points for DePauw, as he won the shot put competition (14.32m) and finished second in the discus throw (42.18m).

"That's what I've been looking forward to all year. It meant a lot to me," McElwain said. "I couldn't ask for much more. You always want to go out on top."

Also earning the distinction of all-conference were junior Nathan Ellis, who placed second in the 10K race with a time of 34:13.98, junior Lavaughn Johnson with his second place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.48 seconds and senior Dusty Kime, who finished second in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:02.41.

In addition, senior Brandon Hood finished third in the 800-meter run. Hood also anchored DePauw's second place 4 x 400 relay team, which also included Johnson, sophomore Chris Dietrick and freshman Robert Steele.

The 4 x 400 relay was the last event of the meet, and, according to Hood, it was a memorable one.

"It was fun to anchor and … to see everyone there at the finish line cheering. It really helped me push myself," Hood said.

In the field events, junior Justin Bull took second place in the men's triple jump, while freshman Thomas Moore finished second in the hammer throw.

Going into this weekend's meet, the men's team had high expectations. However, the Tigers knew it would be difficult to top Trinity.

"It would've been great to win conference at home as a senior, but we were very happy with second … We did better than we expected, so you can't complain about that," Hood said.

The women's team finished in second place with 207 points. Rhodes College came in first with 237.5 points.
