The golf teams' regular seasons came to an end Sunday as the men took 5th place and the women took 2nd at their respective 2008 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Golf Championships. The meets took place close to home at the Twin Bridges Golf Course in Danville, Ind., DePauw's home course.

"It was pretty disappointing," said junior Danny Stetson. "We came in thinking we could win it and didn't play nearly well enough."

In the first round, the men came out strong behind the leading play of junior Joey Piatek, whose score of 78 tied for second best individual play of the round. The men were in third place for the first two rounds of the meet. The men couldn't seem to improve Sunday, finishing the meet with a score 958 and dropping to fifth place. Oglethorpe took the win 36 strokes ahead of the Tigers with a final score of 922. Stetson explained Oglethorpe's tenacity was tough to overcome.

"Oglethorpe played really well to win it," Stetson said. "We would have had to play some really good golf to beat them."

Losing only one senior, the Tigers hope to take the lessons learned this season and come out even stronger next season.

"We learned a lot of stuff for next year and should be a solid team," Stetson said.

On the women's side, the Tigers remained in second place for the entirety of the meet but couldn't get past Southwestern University's strong play.

"We really would have liked to win it," said senior Ali Murghtaugh. "I honestly think there was anything else we could have done to prepare better."

The women finished with a score of 983, six strokes behind the champions, who finished the meet with a score of 977. Senior Kristen Kriegshauser led the Tigers with a score of 240 and a second place individual finish in the meet.

While the regular season is over, the women are hoping they aren't done yet. Although they did not earn an automatic bid to the national Div. III women's golf championships that goes to the winner of each conference championships, there is still a chance they could get an at-large bid. With a 9th place national ranking, the women hope they will get one.

"It's out of our control at this point," Murghtaugh said. "We'll keep practicing until we see if we get that bid. I either played my last round of college golf [Sunday] or I have more to come."
