Current Greek Life Coordinator Autumn Hansen said of Hermen Diaz, the new coordinator, "Hermen has a variety of skills and experiences that make him a good fit for DePauw and for this position in particular."
Hansen said Diaz will officially join the staff July 1. Diaz has an undergraduate degree from Grand Valley State University and a graduate degree from Buffalo State College. Currently, he is working on his master's degree in student personnel administration. He is also a member of Sigma Lambda Beta, and works as the fraternity's initiation volunteer and has had orientation experience with various chapters.
"He has worked with Interfraternity Council on two different campuses, established one IFC and helped them start their first rush, supported Panhellenic Council, worked with various student groups and greek life communities - a sampling of everything," Hansen said.
While his resume sounds impressive, Diaz still had to go through a lengthy process to attain the position.
"We posted the opening on Human Resources and two job interview organizations, as well as with NASPA [National Association of Student Personnel Administrators]," said Aliya Beavers, another current Greek Life Coordinator. "We interviewed around 50 people, and that doesn't include the people who called us or mailed in their resumes."
After the initial interview process, the sitting committee narrowed down the possibilities to three people.
"We had a day of meeting with staff, students and some faculty to look over evaluations," Beavers said. "Hermen was ultimately chosen because he is hardworking, has great communication skills, is willing to be a team player, is able to multi-task, he's personable, gets along with students, and values a good sense of humor, which is important here."
As of now, Diaz's official duties have yet to be debated. Currently, the coordinators are part of the Greek Life Advisory Council, provide chapter support to seven to eight organizations, and have various side assignments, like new member education responsibilities and planning the alcohol program for greek students.
"We first had Tom Hansen as the director, but when he left, we decided a coordinator would be better," Beavers said.
Autumn Hansen said when Diaz officially joins the staff, the GLCs will reevaluate their current responsibilities.
"We will see what Diaz is interested in and make adjustments accordingly," Hansen said. "He will go through training like new member education, and will meet a lot of people and get to know the key players like alumni and staff."
Diaz could not be reached for comment by press time.
