This summer was a busy one for many DePauw students, and the student musicians in TGL and rapper Matt Rivera, who goes by the stage name Matt Rebel, were no exception. Both acts spent much of their summers touring and performing. They returned to campus Saturday, performing at Party in the Park, which was organized by Union Board, Resident Student Association, Black and Gold Alumni Association, Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council and several other campus organizations.
Rivera spent his summer doing a number of shows in the Chicago area and interning for a record label, while the members of TGL spent the majority of their summer touring the Midwest and finished it all off by hosting a launch party for their newest CD in Iowa.
Rivera started the show off with "Liar" and his cover of "Wonderwall," then followed it up with a freestyle set in which he rapped about watches, button-ups and cars.
Rivera expressed some concern about freestyle rapping in front of a crowd.
"It's a little nerve-wracking because you never know if it's going to go well because it's freestyle," Rivera said. "It's kind of scary, but I really like it."
TGL was the next band to play and entertained the crowd with their music, crowd interaction and on-stage taunting of each other.
Band member senior John Sibbitt, who along with bandmate senior Will Cath is taking time off from studies at DePauw, said that they had not played at DePauw in nearly two years until this summer, but returned to play in front of a home crowd and play a release show in Greencastle after playing one in Cedar Rapids, IA.
The band saved their newer songs for the DePauw release party for their newest CD "Sweeter as Fiction," which will be held Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Union Ballroom and will include performances by Winter Parke, Dreams of University and Same as Sunday in addition to TGL.
"We really want people to come to that show. It's everything we've been working on since January. All of that work comes into the night over there," said Zach Stewart, TGL's bassist.
Kyle Gerlach, a freshman at DePauw, had never heard of TGL until about a week before the concert on Saturday but is already planning on going to the release show on Sept. 13.
"I was impressed with everything as a whole, the vocals and the way it all meshed, just really good sound. TGL is what brought me here tonight," Gerlach said.
Rivera praised the support that he has received from the DePauw community in his musical pursuits.
"The good thing about DePauw is that people really support you when you're doing something. I've been supported since day one by everybody," Rivera said.
