Take action on intellectual llife

Issue date: 3/6/09 Section: Opinion
Tuesday's Intellectual Life Forum in the Union Building Ballroom - arranged by The DePauw and President Brian Casey's office - lived up to our hopes. We were pleased to see the room filled by students interested in the intellectual life discussion, which we believe will result in the biggest changes DePauw will have seen in recent memory.
The reasons behind hosting the forum were two-fold. First, we wanted to inform the DePauw community on the current status of the intellectual life discussions. The administration and the faculty have made strong efforts to keep the students updated on the progress of the five initiatives, and we wanted to contribute as well. The second reason we wanted to host a forum was to give you a voice in the intellectual life discourse.
The questions asked by the audience in the open forum were both insightful and fitting, and we thank those of you who engaged in this give and take with Casey, Chair of Faculty Dave Berque and Student Body President Matt Jennings. Many of the people who gave us feedback from the forum said they learned a lot about how to get involved, so we wanted to reiterate this information for you. Any three (or more) members of the DePauw community (students, faculty and staff) can submit a two-page proposal via e-mail to Berque by March 11 on any combination of the five issues. These proposals will have the names removed when they are submitted to the faculty, so students need not worry that their ideas will be discounted because of whom they come from.
Think Winter Term classes should be graded like semester classes? Think we don't need W, Q and S? Maybe you like DePauw just the way it is. All are worth a proposal. The bottom line is that Casey has opened up DePauw to talk about aspects of our University we previously took for granted. Let's not take this opportunity to share our ideas for granted.
