Cheers, Jeers, and Tears

• Cheers to President Brian Casey for a successful first year at DePauw. We look forward to the same commitment to interacting with students and continued discussions on intellectual life come fall.
• Cheers to the faculty for their in-depth work on the intellectual life discussions this year. As we enter summer, there's still a lot to be figured out, but the University should be proud of its enthusiasm in tackling tough issues.
• Jeers to the student government Elections Committee for botching what should be a simple election process, but CHEERS to the Student Senate for upholding the original results for president, vice president and graduate member to the board of trustees.
• Cheers to the Putnam County Humane Society for re-opening its doors after financial struggles.
• Tears to the loss of term faculty professors whose contracts won't be renewed, and also to the difficulty for students trying to fill out their class schedules with fewer professors.
• Tears for the departures of Stefanie Niles and Neal Abraham, two more VPs leaving DePauw.
• Cheers to the new IFC risk managment policy and DePauw's Community Standards office for working so closely with the group to develop these changes.
• Jeers to budget cuts in the academic sphere. They may be necessary, but that doesn't mean we have to like them.
• Jeers to swine flu, but CHEERS to the eight quarantined students being released and their results coming back negative.
• Cheers to winning the President's Cup for athletic excellence in the SCAC four years in a row.
• Tears to Fine Print not providing textbooks this semester.
• Cheers to the passage of three major white papers by the Student Senate. We are glad to see this student government body is doing what it was implemented to do and working with the students to get their input.
• Cheers to a year of landmark media celebrations at DePauw: 100 years of the Society of Professional Journalists, 60 years of WGRE.
