The No. 2 seeded Tigers advanced to the final day of the NCAA Div. III Softball Regional Championships after defeating No. 5 seed Defiance College, 7-0 Saturday.

Serving as hosts for first-round play, DePauw improved to 31-8, while Defiance fell to 30-16 on the season.

The Tigers' junior pitcher, Megan Soultz, pitched a hitless game through three innings.

DePauw jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Freshman designated player Jen Kosinski drew a walk and moved to second on a single by sophomore first baseman Ashlee Anton. Kosinski advanced to third and Anton to second when junior third baseman Kelly Schwerzler reached on an error by Defiance. Senior centerfielder Carolyn Bartlett followed with a single up the middle, scoring Kosinski. Anton scored on freshman rightfielder Rachel MacBeth's walk, and Schwerzler scored on a single by senior leftfielder Chelsy Patterson.

In the fifth, the Tigers tacked on three more runs to take a 6-0 lead. Sophomore second baseman Emma Minx led off with a single, and advanced to second on an illegal pitch. Minx then scored on a single by senior catcher Rachel Gill. The next batter, Kosinski, sent a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left field, scoring two more runs. The home run was the third of the season for Kosinski.

Minx also scored in the top of the seventh on a triple just over the line in right field by Kosinski. Defiance had two hits in the bottom of the inning, but DePauw hung on to win, 7-0.

Kosinski recorded three of the Tigers' nine hits, while Minx had two of her own. Kosinski also added three RBI.

Defiance collected four hits and committed two errors in the loss.

Soultz improved to 28-8 on the season with the win. In seven innings of work, she allowed four hits, walked one and struck out six.

Defiance's Justine Johnson took the loss on the mound.

The win sets up the Tigers for a rematch with Ohio Northern University Sunday. DePauw lost to the Polar Bears earlier Saturday, 5-3. In order to advance out of the double-elimination regional bracket, the Tigers must beat Ohio Northern twice. Sunday's game will begin at noon. A second game, if needed, will be held right after that one. The winner of the regional bracket will go on to the Championships in Montclair, New Jersey.
