Women's Golf: Disappointed team prepares to move on

After finishing 11th in the NCAA Div. III National Championship tournament last season, the women's golf team is ready to return to the links and the top.
In recent years, the women's team has grown used to competing at the national level and placing in the top five in Div. III, which is why head coach Vince Lazar considered last season a down year.
"Though we placed 11th, we were all pretty disappointed when we left the tournament last year," Lazar said, "I know we'll all be hungry to start from day one and grow our team's reputation back and become more of a national power."
Having graduated only one senior in May, Lazar said he looks forward to working with a young and talented lineup. The team will be adding two freshmen, Ohio native Samantha Stahler and Colombia native Camila Romero, both of whom are expected to make an immediate impact on the team's performance.
Lazar said he is also excited to work with rising sophomore Taylor Beaty, who he considers the team's top returning player, as well as senior captain Erin Kielty.
"With the incoming freshmen, we should have a deeper and more talented team from top to bottom," Lazar said. "Many of our players have played a lot of tournaments this summer, so I expect that they'll compete at higher level this year."
The women will open their season at the Anderson Invitational in Anderson, Ind. on Sept. 5.
With the same approach every tournament, Lazar said he has one goal for the invitational - to win.
"We usually play well at this invitational," he said. "We hope to win it and every other match we enter this season."
