Freshmen, run for Student Senate
Issue date: 8/28/09 Section: Editorial
Student Senate showed promise at the end of last school year as an organization that can better represent DePauw students as a whole. Senators are elected by their peers, rather than appointed from a university-recognized organization on campus. The group's smaller size, limited to 20 individuals or five from each grade, also gives it the potential to adopt more meaningful resolutions in a timely manner. For instance, last year Student Senate passed a white paper in one meeting, something Student Government never did.
Amidst a year of great change at DePauw, the possibilities of Student Senate give us hope for better, more effective student involvement in campus decision-making. While the senators for the sophomore, junior and senior classes have already been elected to their posts, freshmen - who brought new ideas and fresh perspectives - have the chance to contribute at this influential stage. Those who want to make a difference on campus should take advantage of the opportunity before them. Submit your application and start campaigning on those issues that you think need addressing.
