Everyone loves college - especially when there's a concert.

Friday night, Grammy Award-nominated rapper Fabolous and rapper Asher Roth, whose break-out single is called "I Love College," are performing. The concert is sponsored by Union Board. Though the event occurs the day before the Monon Bell game, it is not officially part of the events for the weekend.

Union Board music chairs Kiara Williams and Alex Luebbert, both seniors, worked with Residence Life Coordinator Vince Greer, the Union Board advisor, to bring these bands to campus.

Luebbert said they chose the artists to contrast previous concerts.

"The past two years we brought rock and pop types of bands. So, we knew we wanted to bring a hip-hop genre with a recognizable name," he said. "Fabolous and Asher Roth fit our budget and time schedule the best."

Senior Amanda Lane, co-president of Union Board, said the choice of which artist to bring is up to the music chairs.

Williams and Luebbert have been working closely with a company in Indianapolis since this summer to find bands that are both affordable and available on dates that work with DePauw's calendar, Lane said.

"Generally I've heard excitement, but there will always be people complaining about the genre or the timing," Lane said.

Sophomore Jackson Beatty said he was pleasantly surprised to learn about the concert, but his plans are uncertain.

"Since it's on Friday, I may go," he said. "However, it costs money and there is a lot of free entertainment this weekend."

Union Board has been working tables in the Hub to sell tickets during the lunch hour this week and "sales have been going well," according to junior Lizzy Whitlatch, the other co-president of Union Board. Many students have purchased multiple tickets, so there "may be a wide variety of people in attendance, not just DePauw students," she said.

Similarly, Luebbert said he expects the concert will be well attended.

"We are excited for the show and think it will be a great turn out since it's Monon weekend," he said.
