Asher Roth performs in Kresge Auditorium last Friday to kick off Monon weekend in a concert sponsored by Union Board.

After a rigorous week leading up to an eventful weekend, many people took Asher Roth's advice to heart when he said, "Life is rough, but in this moment, leave all your problems at the door and just enjoy yourself."

Over 900 people did just that, leaving their stresses at the Kresge Auditorium doors on Friday night to see Asher Roth and Fabolous perform some of their most well-known songs such as "I Love College" by Roth and "My Time" by Fabolous.

Freshman Meredith Adler said she enjoyed Asher Roth's performance from the front barrier. She also said she particularly enjoyed Roth's profane mockery of Wabash College, which he repeated several times throughout the evening.

"Asher was very personable; he really related to the crowd," Adler said. "The small setting was good for him because he was able to get more involvement. I saw him at Lollapalooza over the summer, and he wasn't as good there as he was on Friday. And with all the Wabash trash talk, he really brought us together and made the event unique to DePauw."

Senior Alex Luebbert, a Union Board music chair, had been planning this event since the summer, and worked closely with a booking agent to arrange for the artists to perform. He said that he was pleased with the way the evening progressed.

"I think it was pretty well attended," said Luebbert. "We really didn't know what to expect having a show start at 9 p.m. on Monon Friday, and the majority of the crowd was freshman, which we kind of expected. We would have liked to see more people turn out, but overall it went well."

Junior Kiara Williams serves with Luebbert as Union Board's co-music chair, and she said the event was worth all the planning and effort. It was originally her idea to bring in a disc jockey at the beginning to entertain the crowd before the main performances, a new addition to the annual shows.

"All the artists did a really great job: the DJ at the beginning, Asher Roth, Fabolous," Williams said. "They all worked really hard to make sure everyone enjoyed it. The crowd seemed really receptive and seemed to enjoy themselves, which is all we wanted on Union Board, for people to have a good time."

This sentiment was echoed by Roth himself, as he shouted from the stage, "I didn't come here to perform, or to put on a show. I came here to throw a party."
