With bright patterns and intricate desgins, a Lilly Pulitzer fundraiser will be one of the beginning steps in raising funds for a memorial scholarship in Shelby Evans' name.
Lilly for Shelby, organized by Pi Beta Phi sorority, will feature items from the gifts and stationery company.
Evans, a member of Pi Phi, was going to be a junior this year when she unexpectedly passed away this summer. Evans' family plans to open a scholarship in her honor to benefit local Greencastle students.
"We are putting the money towards a good cause in Greencastle community," said junior Pi Phi member Kristy Horvath, who helped to organize the fundraiser. "She would be a fan of that."
The event was initiated by junior Sally Tabler, the college representative for Lifeguard Press, the company that sells Lilly Pulitzer merchandise. Tabler is also a member of Pi Phi.
"We wanted to bring greek life closer and thought of this event," Tabler said. "We knew that if people could buy something and give, they would be more willing to do it."
Lifeguard Press will donate 10 percent of the total sales to the scholarship fund. Tabler also agreed to give her personal 15 percent commission to the scholarship fund, making the donation 25 percent of the total profit.
Both Horvath and Tabler agreed that the fundraiser is a way of dealing with their grief over the loss of Evans.
"It's all about coming together for Shelby and be in a place where people can speak freely about her," Horvath said.
Tabler expressed similar sentiments.
"I spoke with Mrs. Evans and she was hesitant to start something so soon," Tabler said. "But for my friends and I, this is our way of grieving, our way of figuring out how to deal with it."
Freshman Abbey Ginn said she is excited to attend the event.
"I really like Lilly Pulitzer and I think it's a great way to raise money for [the] scholarship," she said.
