Haiti effort good, shouldn't stop
Issue date: 2/5/10 Section: Editorial
During Winter Term, a time that is meant to allow students to focus their intellectual energy outside of the classroom, the DePauw community responded to a natural disaster that struck the nation of Haiti. President Brian Casey declared DePauw's official support to the Haitian victims through both a campus-wide email and a link on the DePauw homepage that discusses ways to assist the Haitian cause; go check it out. We are proud that, while we were scattered across the globe studying, working or playing, (or doing all three) we were able to unite in our support for Haiti.
We are hopeful that, while second semester will only make our lives more hectic, we will remain focused on this admirable goal, the level of enthusiasm will remain high and our philanthropic efforts will succeed as a product of our livelier commitment to such endeavors.
In short, we hope that the compassion displayed in response to the tragedy in Haiti sets the tone for a more selfless, volunteer-oriented semester. With the Relay for Life kick-off meeting right around the corner, it seems appropriate that we briefly put aside thoughts of homework, new group requirements, recruitment and pledgeship to focus on those in need outside of our comfortable DePauw bubble.
