Tuition help should be every year
Issue date: 2/5/10 Section: Editorial
The tuition bill - an unfortunate reminder that the class you skipped this morning cost about the same as the video game console you were playing instead. A $2,000 increase in tuition is cause for concern for all students and their families, but Depauw is making an effort to help.
The Board of Trustees approved a $5 million dip into the endowment and a $5 million reduction in the University's operating budget. We applaud the University for this unprecedented endowment money release and taking the time to re-examine the budget.
At the same time we hope this isn't an isolated gesture. Tuition increases will undoubtedly come every year, and we hope the University continues to evaluate its budgetary concerns before handing the costs off to students and their families.
There will always be places where money can be saved, and those should always be examined before DePauw raises tuition.
