Recognized student organizations on campus will soon have the option to apply for housing as an entire group through the university's housing lottery. Starting Wednesday, Feb. 10 organizations can apply on the Residence Life and Housing page on DePauw's Web site.
At the next DePauw Student Congress meeting, Residence Life and Housing will promote this new option to student organizations, referring to it as Student Organization Housing, or SOH.
For the 2010-2011 lottery, student organizations will be able to apply to live in houses of six, eight or ten people. This does not include duplexes, apartments or units in Rector Village.
Julia Sutherlin, a coordinator of Residence Life and Housing, believes that these houses will prove valuable for student organizations.
"The houses have large common spaces that will be the most beneficial for the organizations to hold meetings and gatherings in," Sutherlin said.
According to the Residence Life and Housing page on the DePauw University Web site, this new option will provide "the opportunity to apply to live together in housing which serve to support and encourage student organizations based on their shared interests, common goals and organizational mission."
It is Residence Life and Housing's goal to keep the organizations in the same house for consecutive years, providing students with a sense of permanence and continuity.
Sophomore Maddie Patterson thinks SOH will have a positive effect on DePauw's student body.
"I think it's a great idea because this campus is so greek oriented that it will give smaller organizations a sense of unity that the larger houses have," Patterson said.
There are several requirements for a student organization to be eligible for the housing lottery: only students who will be sophomores, juniors and seniors during the 2010-2011 school year will be eligible to live in SOH. The organization is required to have been recognized by the university for at least the last three semesters and finally, it must have at least 1 1/2 times the number of organization members than the number of occupancies applying for the house.
Beyond that, Residence Life and Housing will determine if an organization is eligible for housing based on a number of other factors, including whether or not it has been active on campus, has strength in leadership and if it will benefit from unified housing. Residence Life and Housing also stresses that SOH is not available for any organization that already has permanent housing.
As of now, there is no set number of houses designated for SOH, although Residence Life and Housing does not anticipate that they will fill all houses.
