With Winter Term out of the way, the men's and women's track teams look to get their seasons off and running on a high note. With DePauw's schedule, which differs from other colleges and universities, however, this can be quite a task at the beginning of the year.

"Because of Winter Term we are just now really getting started," said Kori Stoffregen, head coach of both men's and women's track teams. "Indoor season is preparation for outdoor season and our big thoughts are for the outdoors."

Stoffregen added that he will not let timing be an excuse as the Tigers look to improve their finishes from last season.

The women's team hopes to build upon a successful year in 2009 when they finished second place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Stoffregen is enthusiastic and believes that the team will definitely be in the hunt when it is time to hoist the conference championship trophy at the end of the season.

"We are very solid in all areas and we have a good chance to get that trophy back," Stoffregen added.

The team will look to athletes like senior Lauren Reich to continue in their success from last season. At the 2009 SCAC conference championship, Reich finished first in the 800- and 1500-meter runs. She also finished fourth in the 5000-meter run.

The men, who finished fourth at the 2009 SCAC conference meet, will rely on some key individuals to step up and lead in 2010. Sophomore Charles Pierre finished strong in 2009 and Stoffregen said he believes he will be an asset in helping them win this season.

Pierre is not only expected to be one of the team's top sprinters, but also a top sprinter in the conference.

The team also will look to junior captain Robert Steele for success this season.

"Robert is a really good leader," said Junior Tyler Doane. "He is always working hard and inspiring others to do the same"

Both teams will open their seasons this Saturday at 11 a.m. in the DePauw Indoor Track and Field Center, where they will host the Tiger Invitational.
