Love is certainly the most prevalent theme in pop music. Whether it is lost, newfound or 50-year-old love, we are still drawn to this rehashed theme hoping for new insight. This Valentine's Day, take a listen to these songs for a unique glimpse into love and all its strings attached.
1. "I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" by Meatloaf
I still refuse to throw out this unique song because I have yet to meet anyone who can confidently explain the meaning behind its lyrics. This question resembles our own difficulty to define love, making this song one of my personal favorite rock ballads.
2. "Just The Way You Are" by Billy Joel
The title and lyrics say it all - loving and appreciating that special someone just for the way they are. There is no better a message to send on Valentine's Day.
3. "You've Got A Friend" by James Taylor
Being a rock, a comfort or a helping hand for someone else is one of those qualities that extends Valentine's Day even to platonic friends. Bromance appropriate.
4. "I Will Follow You Into The Dark" by Death Cab For Cutie
If everything we know and understand were to dissolve before us, Death Cab for Cutie front man Benjamin Gibbard reassures us that love prevails. Certainly a darker, yet more sentimental love song.
5. "Long, Slow, Beautiful Dance" by Rascal Flatts
Country music has a knack for telling it how it is. Thankfully, Rascal Flatts reminds of how exhilarating, uncertain and reassuring love can be with that special person.
Not Quite Valentine's Day Songs
Aside from the cheesy love songs played at middle school dances, wedding receptions and on the radio, some tunes flat out deceive us about love's true meaning. These hits are memorable to all of us, but when reciting their choruses you might not realize what you're actually saying.
1. "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton
A favorite wedding pick which you'll quickly realize does not share the same sentiment of the occasion.
